I am so glad to see Metroid here. Metroid I think is the most overrated NES game and maybe the most overrated video game of all time. I didn't start with Metroid. As a child I played a little bit of Metroid 2 and then a little later sometime after the original Super Smash Bros came out but which I played already by then I got Super Metroid which is I think the greatest SNES game ever made. Super Metroid is an amazing game and the map system is so helpful. So maybe for people who aren't already used to the games that came out later the original Metroid might seem amazing, but honestly whenever I've played the original Metroid I just don't enjoy myself. So many rooms look identical to one another and it's really hard to know where you're going. I think it's incredibly stupid that Samus has a pathetic little pea shooter that shoots a shorter distance than how far you can throw a damn rock. At least now there's Metroid zero mission which I did play on the GBA 20 years ago and was a little disappointed with how short it was but remembered still enjoying it and now it's available to play on switch. What's your minds me pretty much my first experience with the original Metroid was actually playing it on Metroid Zero mission because after you beat the campaign on Metroid zero mission you unlocked the original Metroid. Super Mario Bros being overrated actually makes sense to me. I get that it saved the video game industry, but the game as a whole which is a lot of fun yes, it has a lot of levels that are completely identical to one another. Especially when you're doing the hard mode where you're in the Star worlds where literally these levels are 100% identical to one another even down to the enemies themselves. When they were able to release the second game and I know it was on the famicom dish system sure, but when they were able to do that and make every level different with the exception of 7-3 being the same as c-3 and 7-4 being the same as c-4, what's the excuse for having so many levels in the original Super Mario Bros being completely identical to one another? I'm actually surprised that TMNT made the list only because I thought people recognize the game was bad. Look I didn't grow up playing the NES although my older brothers played some NES before I got into playing video games as I grew up with the SNES at N64 as well as Genesis and PS1, but when I finally played TMNT for the NES via the Wii virtual console I did not enjoy it. When it came to TMNT I played the first two games on the Game Boy. The very first game I ever played on the Game Boy was TMNT 2. So much fun! So happy I have TMNT cowabunga collection on my switch. And mind you I know some people will be like oh only people started hating TMNT on the NES thanks to the reviewers out there, but the reviewers have a reason to hate the game so you can't just blame them because actually when I first played TMNT on the NES on my Wii way back I actually wasn't aware of AVGN and I already disliked the game before watching his hilarious reviews of it.

I actually agree with most of these. I mean, a lot of those games were great for their time but they don't really hold up today especially when you have better modern counterparts. Like I'm not going to play Mario Kart 64 or Super Mario 64 now when I can have a better time playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey on Switch. And there are better Kirby games now too, I'd rather play Return to Dreamland or Forgotten Land than Kirby 64.

I don't care what anyone says, I absolutely love the "bad box art" of the original Mega Man. I display it up front in my collection display...and it draws eyes like no other.

Starfox 64. Wow. That was indeed a fave of mine, but i think mainly because of the hype Nintendo Power drummed up. I also loved the game, getting all the mdals and such. But i mever co sidered the plot. It was shooty shoots! Starfox 2 did have an interesting take though, and i wish they had expanded the story in 64. Feels like missed potential.

I have a story about the end of Disc 1 of FF7. I was 16, and there was a girl I went to school with that had a rare heart condition that died about a year after her diagnosis. She had to leave and live the rest of her life in a specialty clinic for treatment in another state. We were close, and I never got to see her in person again except for one holiday when she got to come home. When she passed, I had a very hard time processing her death. I was really numb and tried to occupy my mind because yeah, in the 90s, you just distract yourself and think of happy things, right? I decided to bury myself into a video game and I had just got FF7. When I made it to the end of disc 1, the death scene opened up a floodgate of emotions and I couldn’t stop crying. Yeah, the scene was a total gut punch, but it really brought all those feelings to the front. It was a shock and surprise just like my friend’s death was. It really helped me to grieve properly and process what had happened. Anytime I hear Aeris’ Theme, it jerks me back to that like it was yesterday. I’ve always been a big champion for video games being essential to emotional growth and helping kids to process difficult things in a medium they relate to. It definitely did for me, and even tho it’s not my favorite FF game, I will always love that game game for how much it helped me through the hardest time in my life at that time.

Quest 64 has never been overrated by anybody. The rest of these are not overrated at all. The problem is probably that you're judging these games by modern standards which is totally unfair. You definitely did that when talking about GoldenEye. You have to judge a game for it's time. I would also point out that while GoldenEye was definitely the start of the FPS era for consoles, FPS games were a big deal on PC since the early 90's. There were FPS games on consoles before GoldenEye, and there were FPS games on PC before the early 90's, but they were few and the genre hadn't taken off in popularity yet.

The NES games that have better boxart than their Famicom counterparts are: Bionic Commando is better than Hitler no Fukkatsu, NES Contra is better than Famicom Contra, All black box games are better than their Famicom counterparts (except Super Mario Bros.), Mega Man and Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 have better boxart than Rockman and Rockman 2 and Rockman 3, Journey to Silius has better boxart than Raf World, Battle of Olympus is better than Olympus No Tatakai Battle, TMNT has better boxart than Gekikame Ninja Den Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Blaster Master has better boxart than Chou Wakusei Senki Metafight (just barely- personal preference). And some few Famicom games use the same boxart as their NES counterparts, such as: DuckTales, DuckTales 2, Rescue Rangers, Rescue Rangers 2, Castlevania and Akumojo Dracula, Castlevania II and Dracula II, Gradius, Life Force and Salamander. Also, while the Koei NES games all have very impressive boxart (and there are a lot of them), I just don't think that those box arts compel me to want to play those games. Which makes them less than effective, I think. Personally, I consider Dragon Quests 1-4 to have the best boxarts of the entire NES or Famicom libraries. (strangely their NES american counterparts of Dragon Warriors are absolutely awful box arts in comparison- though excellent games)

My sister-in-law did the box art for Friday the 13th! She wasn’t an LJN employee or anything, just a freelance artist that they hired for the project. I suspect that’s probably the case for a lot of NES boxes, especially from the smaller third-party publishers, which would be one of the reasons that info on them is so hard to come by.

Have you thought about doing a video on manuals? I can’t remember exactly how many notable manuals there are but Zelda 1 is definitely up there in my opinion, the box art is simple and iconic but the manual is even better. I dunno about you but I miss the old school manuals. There’s no reason you can’t go to other consoles too, or even PC games, those definitely had some cool art in the manuals.

Shingen the Ruler is one of favorite games from the NES. You can tell from the box art that Shingen is ready to get down to some samurai butt kicking.
